How To Start Affiliate Marketing In 2019

– So in this video we are
gonna cover how to start affiliate marketing, and
this is gonna be for you if you’ve maybe considered
starting an online business but you’re not sure where
to begin or what to do first or what steps to go through. Maybe you’re looking to get
out of a corporate career that’s really unfulfilling,
driving you insane, and you want to start
building a business around your passions and you’re not
sure the best way to start. Now if that does sound like
you what we’re gonna cover in this video is first
of all a brief overview of what affiliate marketing
actually is and how it works. We are also gonna cover
how to find niches, we’re gonna cover different
ways of driving traffic, we’re gonna cover platforms
to use and the best kinds of strategies to
implement, and we’re also gonna go through a few tips that
are gonna help you really get started in the right direction and with the right mindset
because so many people will fail because their
expectations are just way off. And it’s important to get
that right from the word go. And I talk about this
kind of stuff regularly, I mean I’ve talked all around the world, not just specifically
about affiliate marketing but also online business and mindset, but the whole focus is
just enabling people to start their own business
and ultimately create the lives that they want to be living. That’s more or less, it
encompasses everything I do. So let’s go through the
first part of this video which is what actually
is affiliate marketing. Now in simple terms, affiliate
marketing is where you recommend another business’s
products or services and you receive a commission
in return for doing so. And the way that I normally explain, or the easiest way to think of it, if you imagine the normal
stages of a typical business, the normal components
of a typical business, say you have at the front
end you have marketing and then you have sales
and then you have product like the fulfilment of
the product or service, you then have product support, of course product development. You’d also have maybe logistics
if it’s a physical product, you might also have legal,
finance, operations, like other departments within the company. HR, and so on and so forth. There’s a lot of different
components that make up a typical business. Now what affiliate marketing
is is you’re essentially taking charge of just the
front end part of that process and you’re letting another business deal with all the backend stuff. So you just find business
customers, and you receive a percentage of the revenue
like a revenue share in exchange for doing
that, and then the business deals with all the product
fulfilment, the support, and so on and so forth. So affiliate marketing
is a super effective and much lowr maintenance
way of getting started in business without having
to deal with everything that a startup entrepreneur would normally have to deal with. So affiliate marketing is a
much easier barrier to entry, and nowadays with digital
technology, automation, things available to us online. For example, you’re watching
this video and at the point where you’re watching this
video, along with maybe hundreds, maybe thousands, maybe tens
of thousands more people, who knows, at the point of
you watching this I’m not actually sitting here, I’ve
already shot the video. It’s done, and if during this
video you get information that helps you move forwards
and that kind of introduces you to other things I can do
to help, and maybe one day you even go through more
of my videos and then you purchase some of my stuff,
that’s all automated. I’m not trading time for money to do that. Once I’ve set up these
systems at the front end, they just work and people
will continue getting value regardless of what I’m doing. I could be sleeping,
I could be travelling, I could be doing whatever. I don’t have to deal with
actually fulfilling on all the stuff if I’m an affiliate
and I’m recommending other business, products, or services. So that in a nutshell is how
affiliate marketing works. You’re taking care of one
part of the overall business process and in return for
taking care of that part you receive a commission for doing so. And the second thing to
consider are what niches, if you’re gonna get started
in affiliate marketing, what niches are you gonna be focusing on? And there’s many different
answers to this question, many different ways to look. I mean you can look at
what are the biggest and most profitable niches,
but also they’re gonna be the most competitive generally. The way I think that is
best to focus on this when you’re starting out is think about what problems in your life
you have tried to solve, and the definition of a problem could be, it doesn’t actually have to
be like a physical problem, not like your drains
burst and you’re trying to fix your plumbing or
something, it could be though. Typically a problem would
be when have you tried to change something in your life. So maybe something that
you weren’t happy with or something that you tried to improve, or something where you
wanted to move from a place to another place and what was the solution
that you were looking for to solve that problem. So I’ll give you a couple of examples. Now it might be that you really
enjoy golf, you love golf. And the problem is that
your game was just crap, it wasn’t going very well. And you decided that you wanted lessons and you also wanted to buy new clubs. Now as you decided that you
wanted to buy new golf clubs, you went through a process of
probably researching online, seeing what was available,
looking at what different articles might be best for
you, educating yourself on what your options were,
and then making a purchasing decision based on that. Now as you went through that
process, if an affiliate, so an affiliate for let’s
say a golf club brand, was to, you were to find an
article that they’d written or you found a new informational
video that they’d shot, they covered the best way to
select the right clubs for you and gave you a whole
load of tips and advice, and then they recommended
you places to check out, clubs that they’d recommended,
if you were in the market for golf clubs and their
advice had specifically helped you with finding the
solution to your problem, which in this case was buying golf clubs or finding golf lessons,
then they as the affiliate when you click their links,
if you then went on to make a purchase, the affiliate
could earn a commission for giving you that information. And it might be, as another
example you might have had a problem in your life
where you’ve really tried to get in shape but you’ve
kind of joined the gym a few times before but you’ve
never really followed through. Now if you were online
you decided you know what, I need structured programme, I
need something that is really gonna give me accountability,
gonna give me a step by step schedule to follow, I
need something much more tangible that lays everything out for me so I could follow that process. And again, if you start
looking online and you start looking at different
programmes, different health and fitness programmes,
you may then uncover some different options, and if
an affiliate of the health and fitness programme at that
point got some information in front of you that really
helped you in this decision making process, again maybe
an article, maybe an article, maybe a video, maybe
an advert to a course, or a story of how they themselves managed to sort their health and fitness out and how they did it,
and then they recommend to you how they did it and
you then click the link and go through and make the purchase, again same thing, affiliate
can earn a commission for getting that
information in front of you at the right point. So to summarise here, the
point is when you’re focusing on a niche, if you can
focus on areas that you’ve actually tried to solve
problems in your life, that is really gonna help
you get in the mindset of what you needed and
what you were looking for so that you can get the right solution in front of people who
were in the same mindset, ’cause really when you brought it down, that’s all marketing is. Marketing is helping people
solve their pains and problems. That’s it. And if you become an expert at that, helping people solve
their pains and problems, that’s gonna go a long
way towards helping you generate income streams
online or build businesses around your passions, but
it’s based around helping people solve their pains and problems. So that brings us on to
the next thing to consider, which is high ticket versus
low ticket affiliate models. Now to explain a bit
more about what this is, I’m gonna dive into the
laptop now and we’ll cover how this actually looks
when you’re building a business behind high
ticket or low ticket. All right, so let’s dive in. Okay, so the simple
difference between high ticket and low ticket is referring
to the price point. So high ticket means high
price point and therefore generally high commissions
for you as the affiliate and low ticket means low price
point and therefore lower commissions for you as the affiliate. The theory though is that low
ticket is easier to convert to a sale because it’s less
of an investment for people, obviously that depends on the market and it’s all relative as
well, and high ticket means, ’cause it’s a higher
investment, is generally harder to make the sale but you need less sales to actually earn you a decent commission. So let’s say for example
to give you specifics here, let’s say you were selling
something, a high ticket coaching product for example
that earned you 1,000 dollar commission per sale. Now let’s say you’ve decided
I want to earn five grand per month and that’s gonna
be my first income stream and that will provide me
the foundation that would enable me to quit my job, for example. Now at five grand per month,
if you’re earning 1,000 dollars commission per
sale, that’s gonna be five sales per month. Now on the flip side, if
you’re selling like a product on Amazon, and I’ll cover this a little bit more in a second, but
if you’re selling an Amazon product that’s say, 50
dollars, and you’re getting 10% commission for the
sales, that would be five dollars per sale, and
therefore if you want to earn 5,000 dollars, that’s gonna be 1,000 sales that you have to make. Now this means that we
need to consider as well the cost of the traffic
that we’re generating, which takes us onto the
next point, which is paid versus organic strategies. So with low ticket,
which is this one here, typically because you have
to drive a lot of sales and therefore a lot of traffic
to generate any substantial revenue, that means cost of traffic, if you’re doing paid advertising, the cost of the traffic will
be way too high generally, this is a generalisation,
but it would generally be way too high to make it viable to run a paid marketing strategy for low ticket affiliate business models. So that means low ticket,
usually you’re gonna go for organic. And organic means ranking on
Google, so writing blog posts, articles, sort of getting
your website ranked on Google. It can mean organically
ranking YouTube videos, so for example this one you
might be watching on YouTube, you might have found it
organically by typing in something around affiliate marketing
in the YouTube search bar. And organic traffic is free,
but is also a lot longer, it takes a lot longer and
it’s a lot more consistent effort required to start having your content ranked organically. So a paid strategy,
which is how I actually started online with paid
marketing strategies is much quicker, much more direct. You can leapfrog the
whole process of trying to get your content ranked in
front of other people online by doing paid marketing, and
most platforms use a bidding structure so it’s like an
auction when you’re bidding against other advertisers
for particular traffic. And again I’ll cover a
little bit more about that in a second, but for higher ticket models, so if you’re getting higher
commissions per sale, you can generally afford
to start considering paid strategies because your
margins are much higher. If I make five dollars per sale, if I want a 200% ROI I can’t afford to pay more than $2.50 per sale at the front end. But if I wanted 200% ROI
on 1,000 dollar commission, I can afford to pay up
to 500 dollars per sale at the front end. A 500 dollar cost per
sale is a much bigger margin than a $2.50 cost per sale. And when you’re bidding
against other advertisers, do you think the
advertiser that can afford to spend 500 dollars per
sale versus 2.50 per sale who is likely gonna have the bigger budget and is therefore gonna win the bids? It’s gonna be the higher
ticket advertiser, right? And obviously there’s other factors like your conversion
rate, your opt-in rate, and so on and so forth, again don’t worry too much about that now,
but the point is that higher ticket commissions,
advertisers using higher ticket can generally
afford to pay more for traffic with paid strategies. So think about that when
you’re looking at what sort of business you do want to build, and what sort of niche you want to go in, it is important to consider what is the ticket value per sale ’cause that will impact
how you drive traffic. And here’s how this can look, right? So let’s say, and I
talked about expectations, and this is where expectations are key. If you get started building an
affiliate marketing business, and let’s say you want
to get started selling, I don’t know, fishing equipment
or something like that. You sell fishing lures on Amazon. And let’s say for ever
sale you’re gonna earn a dollar or two dollars per
sale, so you would need to, if you want to earn your
5,000 dollars, you would need to be doing two and a half thousand to 5,000 sales per month. And if the expectation is you
want to get started online, you’ve got no money so you’re
gonna use free strategies, so you’re gonna do organic, and if you’re like well, if I hadn’t made money in 30 days, then I’m probably gonna give
up and probably gonna quit, with an organic strategy,
that is not going to happen. You need to be willing
to invest a lot of time at the front end to
consistently put content out, often for six months, 12 months, sometimes even 18 to 24
months before you’re really gonna see any kind of traction. So what this means is if
you’re gonna do a low ticket organic affiliate model, for
example Amazon Associates, typically you’d want to be
making sure that what you’re doing you’re actually interested in. So I’ll give you a couple of
examples now of a business model that you might look
at with low ticket affiliate commissions but uses an organic strategy and can be substantially
viable for the long term. So let’s say you’re a
photographer and you love, you absolutely geek out
over camera equipment, and new technology and so on and so forth. Now if you’re selling on
Amazon and you can set up what’s called an Amazon
Associate’s account, I personally by the way, I don’t really use Amazon Associates myself, it’s not the kind of model that I incorporate in my stuff, but
let’s say that you really really loved, as I say, camera equipment and you just geek out over new tech, and you wanted to create
maybe a YouTube channel where you view all the
latest camera equipment. Then whenever you do your review videos, you can put links down
below to actually purchase the camera equipment
that you’re recommending. So the way you do that is you
set up an Amazon Associate’s account which is really quick and easy. You would download their
tool called SiteStripe and if I remember I think
it prompts you to do that the second that you first sign in. And when you’ve got
SiteStripe, what it means is there will be a little bar that appears whenever you’re on Amazon,
you’ll see this SiteStripe bar at the top. And what it does is if
I search for a camera, say like a Canon, I’m just
gonna pick one of the ones here, so like, in fact tell you
what, let’s go for the 80D. Okay, so I want to look
at a Canon EOS 80D. If I click that link, now
what’s gonna happen is on the SiteStripe bar, I can get the link for this particular product. So I will click get link, and I can either just get the text link. And that’s an affiliate link that links to my Amazon Associate’s
account, so you can see here it’s got my store ID and
tracking ID, that’s the link shortened, and I can also do the full link if I want the full traffic data, but a short link is normally much easier. Or if you’re gonna embed
it on your website, then you can get the
text across your image, or just the image as
well, and it’s gonna link to your Amazon Associate’s account. and what happens is
somebody clicks this link, so if I just drop it in here, it’s gonna go to that page,
but in the tracking data on there it’s got my Amazon
Associate’s affiliate link. And if somebody then goes
on to purchase this item and if they add other stuff
to their basket as well, I would get a commission
not just for this item but for everything that they
purchased within 24 hours of them clicking that particular link. And so the way that that
would look is if you look at Amazon’s UK standard
fees for associates, you see the commission
breakdown for different types of equipment, all right? So computer, electronics, video
games, cameras, et cetera. 3% commissions, so for a 900 pound sale, you would be earning about 30 quid, just over 30 quid for
that sale, all right? And so that will be a viable
strategy, if you love reviewing camera equipment, if you geek
out over camera equipment, and every video you pop in in
the description down below, links to purchase the product,
as you start racking up views if people get value out
of watching that review and then they too purchase the product, you’ll start to see a
passive income stream generated in the background. But you’ve got to be
aware and have the right expectation that to grow
that channel is gonna take a substantial amount of
time, you can’t just rank videos on YouTube by just
putting up three or four videos and then watch all the
organic traction increase, that’s not how it works. A really cool tool, I’m gonna
just touch on this quickly to give you an idea, a really
cool tool though to start seeing the volume of search
terms, if I type like Canon E0S 80D camera, there’s a tool called vidIQ, so just type in Google download
vidIQ Chrome extension, they did a free version, I
think this is the paid version. But what it will let you
see is the search volume of people searching that keyword
and the competition score and what you want is you
want to have a high search volume and a lower competition score. So this is all right as a keyword. But what it will also show
you is similar keywords down here that you can try and rank for. So Canon 80D video test. So if you are building a
channel that’s focused on reviewing tech equipment
or something that’s focused on fishing or golf or whatever,
this is gonna let you start to research keywords that
you can build videos around to try to rank for. This is actually exactly what
I’m doing for this video now. I’m ranking for how to
start affiliate marketing. So the topics in this video are focused around trying to rank for
this particular keyword, okay? So that’s a quick tip for YouTube. Now another thing as well
is you might do organic content on Google, so you will
be building your own website, and let’s say your website
is again focused on reviewing camera equipment or fishing or golf, or whatever your interest is. And then for ranking organic
content, you can use a term called Keywords Everywhere in Google. So if I search for
Canon EOS 80D in Google. With the Keywords
Anywhere Chrome extension, it should pop up in a second. Where is it, okay it
just bumped it down here because of the paid ads. But it’s the, sorry, Keywords Everywhere, not Keywords Anywhere. Keywords Everywhere Chrome extension, it’s gonna show me down here
the keyword search volumes and if I want to do paid
marketing, it’s gonna give me some ideas of cost per
clicks, so on and so forth. So I can get a feel for
what keywords if I’m writing articles and blog posts,
what keywords am I trying to rank that article for? I’m not gonna go into
more detail than that on this particular video,
but those are two typical organic strategies focused
on building an audience around something that
you’re interested in. I wouldn’t recommend trying
to do organic strategies on stuff that you’re not interested in. Because the amount of work
that you have to put in to actually rank in content,
if you’re not interested in what you’re actually doing
it’s gonna drive you insane. All right, so don’t do that. Now if you are going down
the high ticket route though, you can of course also utilise organic which can be equally if not more powerful because you’re getting
so much more commission and revenue from each
cell that you generate. But, with high ticket
strategies, you can also consider paid marketing. Now paid marketing for my main company Scrap the 9 to 5, the backbone of my strategy
goes through Google Ads, and I do YouTube in stream ads. And so the way that
this would look is I do paid marketing and my
videos will go in front of certain content, and
so typically it’s personal development, it will be
people like Tony Robins or Law of Attraction
or so on and so forth. So if I just go like,
let’s just go last month for example, what it’s
gonna show us here is what campaigns am I running, can I
rank for particular keywords? And I have different ads that I run and so on and so forth. And basically again, this
isn’t gonna be a video about Google Ads or paid
marketing in General, but by running paid marketing
campaigns, I can completely leapfrog having to rank
content organically and I also be highly targeted
on who I get my stuff in front of, okay? So paid marketing you
might consider Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Google, Bing. There’s other things like
Easy Online Marketing and again there’s a whole bunch of stuff. Basically most platforms you can do some form of paid marketing on, kind of. In this video I’m not
gonna go through a training on how to actually do paid marketing, because that’s a big big
big big big topic to cover in other videos. But that’s kind of what’s
available if you’re in the higher ticket model. Now another thing to
consider and by the way, if you’re watching this
and you’re like okay, this is getting too
confusing, this is too much, I don’t know what to do or where to start, don’t freak out, I do a
webinar which you can actually access in the top corner
either now or after this video. There’s a webinar that’s
gonna go through those first steps in more detail on how
to actually educate yourself on this stuff that we’re talking about. So don’t panic. I just want to give you an
overview of what the different components are of building an
affiliate marketing business. The thing that I recommend
is if you want to go down this path I would absolutely
recommend starting your own website. Now I use WordPress, and I’m not gonna, in this video, go through necessarily the ins and outs of how to start
your own WordPress website, how to host your, how to
set up your hosting company or what the different
options are like like Wix and Squarespace and
all that kind of thing. I’m not gonna go through
that on this video. Again, in the webinar that
I mentioned that you can access in the top corner, I
do cover that kind of stuff in a bit more detail
about how to get started, but just know that your
website is essentially gonna be the hub, the central point
of your entire strategy. It’s your online real
estate, it’s an asset that will be there that you
own and have full control of because although using
platforms like Instagram and Facebook and YouTube
and so on are great and they’re incredible ways
of building an audience, at any point the platform can, you could get shut down, they
could remove your channel or page, they could change
the way they operate which means that your
source of traffic just falls of a cliff. So if everything that you
do goes through a platform, then you are kind of at
the mercy of that platform. But if you also have a
website that forms the hub of what you’re building out,
then you own that website, that’s yours, and a platform going down isn’t gonna remove the hub
which is the centre point of your strategy. So important to have a website,
and off the back of that, if you’re setting up a
website, another thing that is absolutely crucial to do is start to build an email list. So even now, like email
marketing has been around for 15, 20 years, probably more, like email auto-respond to marketing. One of the most profitable
marketing channels available because once you have
somebody’s email information and you can communicate with
them through an auto responder, and you can build out your
list, you own that asset and it’s free to you. Obviously except for the
cost of the email software that you use, which is
minimal, but it’s free for you to communicate with your list. And so what this means
is if platforms go down, if traffic sources die
or whatever else happens, you’ve always got your
list as a major asset in your business to communicate with and continue building a relationship with and providing value to. For starting out, I would
recommend using a software called AWeber, and just
below this video you’ll see a link to access your own
or to set up your own AWeb account as well with 30 days for free. So you can use the link below
to access 30 days for free. AWeber, I don’t use it
any more, I used to use it when I started out, so I
just set up a dummy account. What I use now is something
called Infusionsoft, which is a bit more complex
and also a lot pricier, so I would not recommend
starting with Infusionsoft. I got to about 20K subscribers
before I deactivated AWeber and switched to Infusionsoft. But AWeber starts at 19 bucks a month, so you can check it out for 30 days. So you can set up,
figure out how it works, set up campaigns which
basically sends automated emails to your subscribers
and those emails can be focused around, again, if you’re doing a golf
business for example, your email is obviously
gonna be focused around something to do with
providing value regarding golf to your subscribers. But it’s important to build an email list and collect name and email
addresses from your website so that you have that as
an asset in your business to communicate with. Okay, so final point. I know there’s a lot of
loose ends, shall we say, in this video because it will
be extremely time consuming to go through everything as
a how to guide right now. However, hopefully that’s
giving you a little bit of an idea of the different
components which gives you something to then start some
research moving forwards. So to make this super simple for you, I’m hosting a webinar and
I’m gonna do several showings and I’m gonna keep it going
for the foreseeable future, and that webinar is going
to cover all of this stuff in a lot more detail and cover exactly how to start educating
yourself on following a step by step process on how to do this. The webinar is free, you
can access it right now in the top corner of this
video or down below as well. You’ll see a link in the
description to register for the webinar. And as I say, there’s quite a few slots, I’m gonna be doing a
couple a day certainly for the foreseeable future, so register, get your seat, watch the
webinar, and I really really hope that helps you cover everything
we’ve talked about here in more detail and start
those steps on actually educating yourself on how to start building your own affiliate
marketing business. All right, so thanks
very much for watching, if you’ve enjoyed this
and got value from it, please hit like. If you do have other questions
or comments or things to add, things you’re not sure about, other videos you’d like me to shoot to follow up on this, ’cause again as I said,
I know there’s a few loose ends that I’m not
able to type in one video. But comment below if you
have other things to add. And finally please hit
subscribe if you’ve enjoyed it. I do three videos like
this every single week. Online business, mindset,
and so on and so forth. Bottom corner right now, hit subscribe, and that will make sure
that you don’t miss anything that I do. All right, thanks very much for watching, really appreciate it, hope
this has been valuable, and I will speak to you in the next video. By for now.
