Junction City leaders to discuss abolishing the city’s pit bull ban

WILL BE DISCUSSING LIFTING THE CITY’S LONG TERM BAN ON PIT BULLS. THIS COMES AFTER RECENT PRESSURE BY ANIMAL ADVOCATES IN THE CITY. KSNT NEWS REPORTER JAMES RYAN IS LIVE IN JUNCTION CITY RIGHT NOW — TO EXPLAIN WHY ADVOCATES SAY — THEY ARE NOT JUST RELYING ONLY ON THE CITY COMMISSION’S VOTE.BRITTANY, THE DISCUSSION IS ALREADY A BIG WIN FOR ANIMAL ADOVCATES HERE IN JUNCTION CITY. I’M TOLD THE CITY COMMISSION HAS NOT SERIOUSLY DISCUSSED LIFTING THE BAN SINCE THEY PUT IT IN PLACE. IN MAY, ANIMAL ADVOCATES BEGIN TO PUT TOGETHER A PETITION TO PUT THE CITY’S PIT BULL BAN ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT – LETTING THE VOTERS DECIDE. EMILY FAWCETT – THE WOMAN SPEERHEADING THE EFFORT – SAYS SHE’S HAPPY THE CITY IS DISCUSSING IT – BUT SHE’S NOT PLACING ALL HER BETS ON THE COMMISSION.CITY MANAGER ALLEN DINKEL SAYS THE COMMISSION WILL HAVE A DISCUSSION DURING THEIR MEETING TUESDAY NIGHT AND THERE WILL BE A BRIEF TIME FOR PUBLIC COMMENT. HOWEVER, HE SAYS THE COMMISSION WILL NOT BE VOTING ON THE BAN DURING THIS MEETING. DINKEL SAYS HE’S BEEN FOLLOWING SIMILAR VOTES IN CITY’S ACROSS THE STATE AND IT’S BEEN A TOSS UP WITH SOME CITY’S STRIKING DOWN THEIR BAN AND SOME HOLDING IT UP. AT THIS POINT HE SAYS HE’S NOT SURE HOW THE COMMISSION WILL VOTE – IF IT COMES TO THAT. LIVE IN JUNCTION CITY, JAMES RYAN KSNT NEWS.THANKS JAMES. IF THE COMMISSION DOES EVENTUALLY VOTE TO STRIKE DOWN THE BAN — THAT DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN THERE WON’T BE RESTRICTIONS. ADVOCATES SAY — THEY ARE SUGGESTING REQUIREMENTS LIKE A FENCED IN YARD — AND TO HAVE PETS SPAYED OR NEUTERED.###
