SCDOT Commission approves I-26 expansion project

APPARENTLY MAY HAVE ALSO BEEN INVOLVED. THE VINCENTE, I AM RAYMOND OWENS, COUNT ON 2. A PROPOSAL FOR A WIDENING PROJECT FOR I-26 WAS OFFERED TODAY DURING A D.O.T. MEETING. THE D.O.T. IS TARGETING A RURAL SECTION THAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR TRANSPORTING FREIGHT. Reporter: THE D.O.T. SAID FREIGHT TRAVEL IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE ECONOMIC GROWTH. THEY WANTED TO COME UP WITH A PLAN THAT WOULD ENHANCE TRANSPORTING GOODS. AS OF TODAY, THE COMMISSION APPROVED WIDENING 18 CORRIDORS. A $1.8 BILLION PROJECT THAT THEY PLAN TO TACKLE OVER THE COURSE OF A FEW YEARS BY SPENDING $110 MILLION PER YEAR. THE MONEY WILL COME FROM MONEY THAT CURRENTLY GOES BACK TO TAXPAYERS. THERE IS A SIX YEAR PROGRAM IN WHICH TAXPAYERS CAN FILE FOR TAX CREDITS CONNECTED TO THE INCREASED GAS TAX. ONCE THAT PROGRAM ENDS IN 2023, THE D.O.T. PLANS TO ALLOCATE THAT MONEY WHICH AVERAGES ABOUT 114 MILLION PER YEAR AND PUT THAT TOWARD WIDENING I-26. MEMBERS OF THE D.O.T. COMMISSION BELIEVED THE PROJECT IS LONG OVERDUE AND IT IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR ECONOMIC GROWTH. AS I MENTIONED, THE MONEY TO FUND THE PROJECT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL 2023. CONSTRUCTION MAY NOT EVEN START UNTIL 2026. MAYBE BEFORE THAT OR JUST AFTER.
